First step to this process is to fold in the edges 1/2' and
sew all the way around folding the corners. This should give you a piece
of material that is now 4" X 13" |
|

|
Next step turn the piece over, take the 1" hook..
Sew in the center 1" from the top. Remember there is NO top or bottom
till you get to this step so which ever end you use will become the top.
Remember to sew the hook not the loop because all the props had the hook
attached to them and incase of emergencies when you holder disappears like
in Spock's Brain you will need some way of attaching your communicator.

Still with me? Okay. Now your going to turn the piece
back over where the hem is showing. Sew down starting at the bottom the
loop section of the Velcro.. This is very important that you only use the
fuzzy loop part and discard the hook. Sew them side by side.. |

Your finished product will look like this. |
 |
Add your phaser and it will look like this...
But wait? What about the top part with the seam exposed???
This is being created for convention and Halloween use and you want to
make sure that while walking (which you'll be doing a lot of for
both events) your holster and phaser don't fall off, so you'll need
it to be as secure as possible..
In the original series there was no 1" overhang. That is the whole
point of the inner Velcro. It was cost efficient not to have 2 pairs of
paints for each actor. So you will need to sew the 1" loop to the
side of your pants. It doesn't have to be directly in the middle it can be
off to the side a bit. If you look close at the next set of pictures you
can see where the holder is to go. |

 |
I lightened up the pictures so you can get a better idea of
where the loop piece is to be sewn. So you've sewn the loop piece to the pant. Attach
the holder to the Velcro strip so that the 1" over hang is 1" above
the waist. Fold over and pin. Undo the holder from the Velcro and sew it
down to the pants. Re-attach the holder, and your done.
Put your pants on, then your tunic then attach your phaser...
A short explanation on why I did it this way
Years ago I was at a convention and I had my holder the same way they
did in the show and there were so many people there. About 1/2 hour into
the dealers room I heard that familiar ripping sound when you detach
Velcro.
I looked down and not only did my holder come off but my phaser busted
into pieces. Of course I was not a happy camper. I had to buy a new phaser
which was easy at the time being as they allowed them to sell props back
then but not cool that I had too. So when I got home I decided to do a
design that would not only keep my phaser secure but I would feel if
someone brushed up against it.. and it worked..
HERE'S SOME TIPS FOR A MORE SECURE PHASER |
| |
The originals only has Velcro placed on the phaser 1 unit. 2
pieces, one on top and one underneath the mid-plate. This is how you have
your phaser break into a million pieces like me. doesn't give a whole lot
of support to the phaser.

My version gives you more Velcro and better support for the phaser.
I placed Velcro on the phaser 1 unit, the top of the handle and on the
phaser pack(handle) ridges. I used black for the P1 unit the used white
and spray painted it the same color as the body of the phaser..Don't worry
about the texture. you are attaching the HOOK side of the Velcro and it
paint's up pretty neatly.

Conventions can get really crowded as can Halloween parties
and functions. If you like props and are proud of them, then leave the
expensive ones at home. Many prop fanatics have dual props. A HERO
(working prop) which they keep in a case under lock and key. These props
can be very expensive...They also have a STATIC (dummy) prop. These props
can look identical to the Hero version just non-functional and most are
inexpensive and made of resin. If you break it, then it's not $400 bucks
out of your pocket..
For this phaser, it is NOT recommended that you attach Velcro to your
expensive one. There are always kit's on eBay and other places for around
$30 - $50 dollars. They are really easy to put together and
sometimes they will come completely done you just have to sand and paint.
Better to lose a $30 phaser than a $400 one.. |
