This uniform is very similar to the DS9 uniform. It is much more complicated
than the DS9.
There are 2 versions to this uniform and an optional vest. To be the most
accurate, there are a total
of 5 pieces to this uniform. Pants, division tunic, vest, jacket &
jumpsuit. We will examine each one
of these. so lets get started.
PANTS:
Using your next generation pants pattern. This is a pattern you can purchase
separately.
It is a very basic pants pattern that is slightly high waisted. If you do
not know how to sew, find
somebody that does. Follow the directions completely and you should have
your pants.
Remember! These pants are supposed to be form fitting, but not so form
fitting that you rip
the seams out when you sit. Usually when I make my uniforms I like to start
from the feet up.
DIVISIONAL TUNIC:
For this tunic I used a polyester fabric that stretches. You will have to
use the Wrath of Khan
tunic pattern. All of my tunics are made from this pattern. Of coarse you
will have to alter
this pattern. You will have to install the zipper in the front instead of
the back. Cut and sew the body
of the tunic. Take the collar piece and fit it to you neck. Determine how
snug you would like it and
cut of excess leaving 5/8" for the seam. Cut a slit in the front of the
body center 11". Install your
collar. Important! Do not fold collar piece and sew down, leave it
completely open. You will
fold it once the zipper in. Pin the zipper in place and sew in. Now if you
have pictures, look at the
collar where the zipper is. You will see A raised area covering the zipper.
This is done by cutting
strips the same length as the opening, Cut strips of batting the same
length. These strips should be
1" wide. Lay the batting on top of the fabric and fold in half so that
the batting is on the inside.
Sew down to the tunic on both sides. Install your sleeves, hem, add rank
pins and your set.
THE JACKET:
This is probably the hardest part of the uniform. It is
for captains only... Just kidding.
If your not experienced at sewing or have no knowledge of sewing, Do Not
attempt this uniform.

Now thats said and done, let's move along. This uniform is
based on the voyager uniform with
a more elegant edge. What I did, was take my dummy voyager uniform (my first
draft) and cut
around the waist at the bottom of the bands. Do you have you're seam ripper
handy!
You need to take off the sleeves first. Remove the yolk. Yes all of it. All
you should have
left is the 2 front pieces connected to the back. This is your jacket.
Separate the seams at the
shoulders and down the sides. You now have 3 pieces. Remove the elastic from
the coat and
lay all three pieces on your fabric, pin & cut. Sew the new pieces
together.
You now have the bodice.
Now the yolk, You'll need to get out your voyager pattern.
Take your gray fabric and some
batting and quilt your lines 3/4" apart. this is important because you
want the back and the front
lines to match up when you sew. Do this for the sleeve pieces too. you'll
need to cut two of each piece.
One of the quilting and one without (this is for the inside). Use trimming
in the same color to
trim the outside. This is a tricky process, Too difficult to explain in
words. sew all the pieces
together. Your jacket is most complete. Install the zipper using top
stitching. The same way you
installed the straps on the Voyager, you'll do on this jacket except this
time the strap goes all the way
around the jacket. Insert the elastic and pin one end. Pull till the jacket
feels snug. Pin then sew down
both sides. Your jacket is now complete.
JUMPSUIT
This jumpsuit is exactly the same as the Voyager uniform
with the exception of the gray quilted yolk.
Sew it exactly the same and replace with the gray.
VEST
The easiest way to make this vest is to buy a vest
pattern. Make a dummy vest out of muslin.
Draw a line around the mid section and cut. This is your yolk. Rip open the
seams, lay on your
gray quilted fabric, cut and sew. Take the bottom portion and do the same
thing, but with your black.
Sew the two pieces together, sew your your zipper in, hem, and your done.
Most people choose the Captains uniform because it's
better fitting than the jumpsuit. The hardest part of this uniform is the
trimming. It's best to study close up pictures to see how it looks. I just
about wore out my First Contact video keeping it on pause so long.
