Uniforms

THE CAGE

These tunics are not as hard to make as one would think
You can actually us the WOK tunic pattern for this uniform and
increase your size. So if you normally would wear a large, create
this uniform in an XL. Now to start you'll want to make this out
of velour use a stretch fabric. Altering your WOK tunic pattern is easy.
The front is already placed on the fold, you can do the same with the
back piece. Measure the center seam of the back pattern by 5/8",
draw a line on your pattern all the way down the center seam.
(remember the back was designed for a zipper to be installed using
5/8"), Lay your fabric and fold. Match up the line you just
drew on your pattern to the fold of the fabric. Trace and cut. You
now have the back piece.  Cut the sleeves and your ready to sew.

I haven't forgot the collar, we'll discuss this in a bit.

Attach the front to the back by their sides.
Attach the shoulder on the right. Then the
sleeve. Your now half way done.
But what about the left side? Well this is
where the collar comes in. You want to use
a heavyweight knit ribbing. There is no exact
science to doing this collar. Easiest way is to
just take a piece of the ribbing and pull it to
where it is comfortable to you and snip the
ends. I like to do it at an inward slant so that
once the collar is done you'll get that bubbled
edge to the collar. Like any collar to get it to
fit right because the circumference will be
smaller that the neck area of the tunic,

fold your collar in half and pit a small mark at the fold at the bottom.
this is your center of the tunic, lay the collar flat and bring both sides
of the collar to meet each other in the middle and bark at the bottom
of both sides. this will be your side markings. place a mark at the
center of the tunic front and center of tunic back .pin the collar on at the
left side and stretch the ribbing till the lines match and start sewing. When
you reach the line stop with the needle through the fabric, stretch and pull
till the next line which will be your shoulder seam. repeat the steps till
the collar has been completed. So now what? Buy a good quality zipper
and install it from the sleeve shoulder all the way up the collar. The pull
should be at the top of the collar and somewhat visible. Now connect
your sleeve and the tunic is 90% done. Now for the sleeve hem, you
want to make sure you over cut the bottom of the sleeve for allowance
Put your tunic on and fold the sleeve outward till you get it to the right
length. Measure 1 1/2" and cut off excess. At this point you will cut off
the seam allowance in a square. cut downward in the seam then cut the
allowance off. If you unfold  the cuff now you will have a seam that
stops 3" before the bottom of the cuff. Refold the cuff and sew together
each side of the slit. When you unfold the cuff you will have the familiar
slit to the sleeve like in the picture.. Add rank and insignia and your done.

Where No Man Has Gone Before

This tunic is virtually the same construction as the cage uniform with
some variances in the collar. The construction is still the same but
don't snip at an angle

Also the zipper does not go all the way to the sleeve so you'll have to
baste stitch the left side of the shoulder and start the zipper about 1 1/2"
from the sleeve. Depends on the look you're going for. Originally Spock's
tunic was designed to have both sides open for make-up reasons,
In some photos it looks Velcro attached and in other scenes it is a zipper.
My suggestion is to just go with the left zipper.

3 special notes of interest

1.) the insignias were different between the two shows so
choose the right one.
2.) The rank is different to an extent. only the captain wore
2 bands of braid.
3.) Fabric colors were also different and this fabric is rare
to find in the right colors and texture
