Stardate March 2008
The goal of this page is to post information of the new costumes
from STAR TREK 2009 (notice I did not call it XI)..I will not post pic's until
they are released and I will not post pic's unless they are clear not blurry! What we do know!
There is an academy sequence and the cadets appear to be wearing Red
uniforms.
They appear (from the pic's I've seen) to be for the women, a skirt with a
tunic and
jacket. For
the men, pants with a spandex tunic and jacket..I think the hat is
optional... Judging by the pictures I've seen they are a
cross between a TWOK uniform
and an Imperial officers uniform from Star Wars. Personally I always thought
the TWOK uniforms were based off the Imperial officers uniforms anyways...
Cadets wear red...Instructors wear Dark Grey...We also know there is a light
grey.
Insignia seems to be metallic

I'm assuming at the Academy there is no
signification
of Command/Science/Engineering as the cadets have not chosen their field yet
but again it is still too soon to tell.

Finally they have released pictures of the costumes, props and the ever
wondering Insignias.
Most of these images are from the Empire Magazine..
INSIGNIAS

These are said to be metal and held on by double sided tape..My Opinion is
they are Resin.
Why would you use double sided tape when any experienced costumer knows that
tape pulls off the
fibers of the fabric and would have to be replaced during every shoot..not
practical..BUT cheap!!!
Too soon to tell!!!!
THE UNIFORMS

These are made from Heavyweight Spandex (super spandex to most) and
have a delta shield
pattern embedded into it using "dye sublimation" Judging
by the Hi Res Pic, It
is 6 pieces...1 front, 1 back,
2 sleeves and 2 strips for..This particular uniform has the
raglan sleeve and has a dart running down the shoulder..Here are some pics..

For this pattern you will need to widen the sleeve to adjust for the dart.
I've made sever attempts
for the premier and the final outcome for the pattern works. Take your TOS
pattern, Adjust the collar
to your liking..remember to keep the points and adjust inward, this
way the back matches the front. I suggest
you make this out any cheap fabric first..Install the gusset like you would
if you were actually making
a TOS tunic..Now after both gussets are basted to the front and back on both
sides, cut a
slit up the center of both gussets..you now have a front and back pattern
similar to the picture above
(I used the Tech Manual for the image above)

Now before getting started you have to have the fabric dye sub'd. the above
pattern is the closest we
have come to it. It was created by JHASH on the ASAP board.(see links page)
James Cawley from
STAR TREK PHASEII (see links page) and Cameo in ST2009 agreed it was pretty
darn close.
There are 3 ways you can do this..One is having the fabric Dye
Sublimated to be most accurate,
Silk Screening which gives pretty much the same results or Iron
Transfer paper..Remember you are
only using the dark BG color, the delta is transparent...I used Transfer
paper..It eats up a lot of ink
but was worth it...All 3 ways are pretty much the same...Heat Transfered...To
learn more about these
processes, go to
Dye Sublimation
Silk
Screening
Iron on
Transfer
Or just go to Youtube and do a search..there are tons of video's
You'll be using the wrong (dull) side of the fabric for the transfer..then
use the shiny side for
your shoulder/collar strips

The rank pictured above is just silver braiding and done
before we knew it is simple transfers in white..
Some speculate it is iron on white bias tape..I haven't done this part yet
but I just might print out the
white on transfer paper in the appropriate rank. I need more data and will
clue you in when I know..
